What if the data centre has no future?

What if the datacentre has no future?

For decades, we’ve been perfecting the same model: giant buildings packed with servers, cooled by megawatts of HVAC, powered by UPS and diesel backup. We chase lower PUE, but never question the underlying assumption, that compute belongs inside buildings at all.

What if the endgame isn’t a more efficient data centre… but no data centre at all? Weatherproof servers, standing outdoors, cooled by natural convection like termite mounds. No chillers, no UPS, no diesel tanks, just software-driven redundancy that shrugs off failures. Compute woven into the fabric of cities and landscapes, not locked inside concrete vaults. That’s my “crazy” idea for where data centres could go over the next 50 years. A world where the building disappears, and PUE isn’t 1.1 or 1.05, but ~1 by design.
